Virginia Beach's tourism has been consistently growing year after year. 19 million people visited the city last year, but not only in the summer.

Winter is a lively and action-packed time of year for Virginia Beach.

When the beach bums leave for the season, the snow bunnies move in. Here they find tons of community events, festivals, and gatherings. Even the animals and wildlife change for the season.

1. Winter Wildlife Festival

Experience winter wildlife all around Virginia Beach. Follow fascinating bird activity, explore the natural areas of the community, or the beauty of harbor seals. Learn how to accurately observe and identify wildlife in their natural settings and photograph some magnificent scenery and animals.

Don’t miss this fun event presented by Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries on January 25 - 27, 2019 at Princess Anne Recreation Center.

2. Take the Polar Plunge

Each year Virginia Beach holds an annual Polar Plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics. Participants fund-raise for their plunge with marketing materials provided to them.

You could take the plunge yourself, or volunteer to help run the event. Despite the icy water, everyone who attends is in warm spirits. Expect lots of hot chocolate, live music, and even costume contests.

This season's Polar Plunge is on February 1-2, 2019.

3. Winter Wildlife Tour

Virginia Beach is one of the best spots in the country for whale watching. The summer attracts tourists who want to see the dolphins; the winter is for the whales.

On one of the many tours available this season, you'll see humpback whales and brown pelicans. If you're lucky, you'll also see fin whales, minke whales, and even right whales.

Boat tours are perfect for the family or anyone interested in marine life. Winter tours start in December and run weekly until the end of February.

4. Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend

Do you like to get outside and run?

Join 25,000 runners from across the US and around the world on March 15-17, 2019 in Virginia Beach to enjoy this marathon weekend and the “luck of the Irish.”

This three-day event is packed with fun for all levels. There are six different events to choose from including a full marathon, a half marathon, and even a Leprechaun Dash.

Enjoy scenic running courses along the oceanfront that are flat and fast then recover at the finish line celebration on the beach which features live music, Yuengling beer, and more. You can also check out the sports and fitness expo.
